Off the Beaten Path: Vol. 5 - The Raconteurs
Artwork by Pat Hamou
This playlist has its origins about the same time as Fresh Cut Finds. In late 2019, I had the chance to see The Raconteurs rock The Tabernacle in Atlanta as they toured in support of their album Help Us Stranger. This album reunited the band after an almost 10 year hiatus as Jack White pursued other projects. Before buying tickets to the show, I had heard a couple of their better-known tracks such as Salute Your Solution and Steady, As She Goes. I had always thought of The Raconteurs as 2nd tier work as compared to his career-launching work with The White Stripes. Jack White is an incredibly talented musician and entertainer and finds perfect balance sharing the spotlight with vocalist and guitarist, Brendan Benson. Their show was the closest that I can imagine to seeing a classic rock band in top form in the 1970s. Rock is still very much alive, and I can’t wait for the next installment from The Raconteurs, even if I have to wait another 10 years.
If I could build a Greatest Hits album for The Raconteurs, this would be it. Without further ado, here’s the playlist. You can enjoy it in full on Spotify.

Before we go, here are some other resources that should help you on your musical journey:
Music Video Selection: Steady, As She Goes, featuring a soap-box derby
Concert/Live Video Selection: Rich Kids Blues, Live at Montreux 2008
Article Selection: Jack White on the Raconteurs’ Return, ‘Old Town Road’ and His Friendship With Dylan
On The Beaten Path: while we normally exclude a number of tracks from this series. The Raconteurs repertoire is limited to just 3 studio albums (+ a live album and a few B-sides). This collection should be a great introduction to The Raconteurs, especially if you’re more familiar with The White Stripes, but haven’t explored Jack White’s other projects.

What is Off the Beaten Path?
Discovering and falling in love with new musical artists is what Fresh Cuts Finds is all about, and Off the Beaten Path is designed to help in that endeavor by spotlighting a particular band we think you’ll really like. Inside, you’ll find a curated playlist, our favorite music video, our favorite live/concert video, and an article about the band (written by people who actually know what they’re talking about). Oh, one more thing. Since most people research a new artist by checking out their Greatest Hits album or scrolling through the most played songs on the band’s Spotify page, our playlist considers them off-limits for inclusion as we figure you already got those covered.
If you have a specific song that you’ve recently discovered or come to love, we’d love to hear from you. Just email us at freshcutfinds@gmail.com. We’re planning to roll out more content and a new playlist series in the coming months. Stay tuned!
