Unearthed Vol. 5 - December '19

I was thinking about you guys yesterday
I’ve been here three times before, and
I think I understand a little bit how you feel about some things
It’s none of my business how you feel about some other things
And I don’t give a damn about how you feel about some other things
But anyways, I try to put myself in your place
And I believe this is the way that I would feel about San Quentin
— San Quentin, Johnny Cash

My Favorite Find: San Quentin, Johnny Cash.

I travelled to Oakland, CA this Thanksgiving and as I drove into the city, I took notice of the tent cities under highway overpasses inhabited by the homeless of Oakland. It was striking. And as I drove to the comfort of my family, I was reminded of the juxtaposition that holidays tend to expose. Between the haves and have nots. Between family and isolation. And between love and suffering.

This song by Johnny Cash reminded me of my first boss who often took the time to look out for people often perceived as less - the cashier at Costco, the janitor at the office building, or a prison inmate long forgotten.
