Unearthed Vol. 7 - February '20

Came into this world
Daddy’s little girl
And daddy made a soldier out of me
Oh, oh, oh
Daddy made me dance
And daddy held my hand
And daddy liked his whisky with his tea
And we rode motorcycles
Blackjack, classic vinyl
Tough girl is what I had to be
— Daddy Lessons, Beyoncé

Featured Find: Daddy Lessons, Beyoncé

When I first started the Unearthed series of playlists, I definitely wouldn’t have guessed that a Beyoncé song would make it into one of these lists, let alone as my favorite find of the month. Perhaps because I’m pretty disconnected from what is getting airplay on the radio, or being performed at the Grammy’s, I have the opportunity to be truly surprised by a song like this.

Beyoncé takes this song in a very different direction from her best known pop, hip-hop, and R&B hits. She delves into a western country aesthetic building on her Texan roots. While the song relies heavily on an acoustic guitar driven rhythm, it also features several riffs from the brass trio Too Many Zooz. It seems to me this may be a growing trend in music, with songs like Arabesque from Coldplay featuring use of brass as well.

The goal of Fresh Cut Finds and the Unearthed series is to help each of you to find music that resonates, that surprises you, or catches you at just the right moment. If you have a specific song that you’ve recently discovered or come to love, we’d love to hear from you. Just email us at freshcutfinds@gmail.com. We’re planning to roll out more content and a new playlist series in the coming months. Stay tuned!

Each month, we put together a playlist of our favorite discoveries new & old. Each playlist will be about the length of a mix CD (80 mins) and will be sent on the 1st day of the month. Subscribe with your email address to receive the monthly Unearthed playlist, plus other occasional speciaty playlists.
