Unearthed Vol. 6 - January '20
“The evil it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh could I be the sky on the Fourth of July?
——————————————————————-
Did you get enough love, my little dove
Why do you cry?
And I’m sorry I left, but it was for the best
Though it never felt right
My little Versailles”

My Favorite Find: Fourth of July, Sufjan Stevens
Fourth of July come froms Sufjan Steven’s seventh and most recent studio album released in 2015. This song describes an imagined conversation between Sufjan and his mother, Carrie, who had died of cancer a few years earlier. Over the past few years, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty in loss, in sadness, and in saying goodbye and this song really captures that for me. Sometimes it is in moments of sadness that you you realize what it is that you are most grateful for. After a wonderful time at home for Christmas, this music taps into some January blues I’m feeling as I’m missing my family. Here’s to a wonderful 2020!
